HELEN

MY HEART STILL pounds into my ribcage when I lock my door behind us. I hit the light switch, and sigh at the sudden light that bathes my living room. After the dim ambiance of the bar and the darkness of the street, it’s good to be home.

Gabriel’s thumb brushes the back of my hand. My fingers grip his so tightly I’m surprised he still feels them. When I look up into his eyes, I half-expect to see pity in his orbs. Instead, there’s something other. Something I have never seen.

His affection comes off in waves, warming me. Though my stomach hurts from the fear, the affection written on his face works like a balm. It soothes me like a warm blanket on a frosty night.

I try to swallow the knot in my throat, but no can do. It’s lodged there as we stare at one another.

“Thank you,” I croak, my voice failing me.

He doesn’t take his eyes from me as he shakes his head. He says no word as we stand there, cocooned in the moment. Gabriel’s handsome features shift as he studies me. His dark eyes rake over my features, analyzing every inch as if he knows my face as well as the back of his hand.

I never thought someone would make me question my beliefs, but that’s exactly what this man is doing. My body responds to the proximity of his with heat, and though I’ve sworn never to get involved, Gabriel’s slipping through my cracks.

“How are you?” He asks, his grave voice soft.

“Fine. Thanks to you.”

He tilts a side of his lip. “You just needed me to give them a distraction. I’ve never seen someone kick ass so fast.”

A chuckle bubbles from my lips, and I’m surprised by the sound. Minutes ago, I was about to suffer the worst experience of my life. I fought and bit and cried out, but the imminence of the fact seemed inescapable. I tilted my chin up and told myself they would not see me cry.

Then Gabriel showed up. In my despair, I didn’t even notice the truck until it was parked in front of me. It was the fact he showed up that gave me a fighting chance.

I have never wanted to depend on someone. But if he hadn’t shown up, I know very well what would have happened, and it would have been a nightmare.

“I’m sorry,” I mutter, looking away from his handsome face.

He shifts. “About what? For not letting you punch the other guy?”

I shake my head. “I’ve been stupid. Keeping you at an arm’s length like this.”

His hold on my hand tightens. “You’re not stupid, Helen. I get it. You enjoy your independence and many men disagree about women having that. You’re not wrong to guard yourself. I’m pretty sure you have your reasons to.”

I take a deep breath, hold it in my chest for a while, then release it. With it, my worries ease. I look up at his dark eyes again.
